ELVIS PUPPY Reception Friday May 14th 6pm-10pm
Exhibition continues through Saturday May 29th Featuring the
recent works of: Patty Carroll (photography & mixed media) Alan
Brunettin (painting) C.M. and Grace Kelly Laster (folk art) Joshua
Miller (serigraph) John Unger (mosaic) Eric Robinson & Eric
Devlin (Citizen Elvis zine with original illustrations) Text Box:
Patty Carroll: "Doug (The Voice) Church" (1997) c-print, 8 x 10 Elvis
Puppy is a collective visual exploration of the good-looks and
charisma, silver-screen appearances and platinum-gold musical
tunes of one of the most important figures of 20th century popular
culture, Elvis Presley. Toying with the common deification of Elvis
by opening the exhibition on Good Friday, Elvis Puppy unifies folk
art, photography, serigraph, painting, mosaic and illustration to
better understand how Elvis became such a reverent figure and
why his legend continues in contemporary society. From his
spiritual potential often portrayed in folk art, to the American obsession with Elvis impersonation documented in Patty Carroll's photography, Elvis is a Zeitgeist of contemporary existence and, as such, a staple in artistic production. Quoting Patty Carroll, "Elvis is someone with whom many people relate very directly; he is not an abstract image in the way Jesus has become to many people. We know what Elvis looked like throughout his life, we all know stories about his behavior, his family, his home and we can still meet his friends. He is both a larger-than-life myth and simultaneously a real person in our hearts" ( www.elimpersonators.com)Introducing works from St. Louis, Chicago, Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia and Massachusetts, Elvis Puppy is a hearty, cross-country exploration of the many shades of this rock-religion icon. Opens Friday, May 14th, 6-10pm.

Polvo Art Studio

www.polvo.org
Start the summer right with Polvo Art Studio! Please come and view our upcoming show Micropolis with a special exhibition of photographs documenting the public works by Mexico City-based artist Simona Schaffer. These public works are socio-engaged following the tradition of 1970´s Mexican public artists. These installations entitled Micropolis were set in the everyday life of Mexico City. Schaffer describes her public works: "Micropolis consisted of six walls representing the buildings of a housing project. In the walls are windows, inside of which, different screens of every day urban life can be seen. The characters are made of enameled metal, and set in little scenarios that reproduce street settings. Housing projects have become a sign of overpopulation and a symbol of the architecture of the 20th century. Micropolis questions the way housing demand has been resolved in most Latin American cities." Reception May 14th 6-10pm.

The Chicago Arts District is an approximately 12 square block area on Chicago's near Southwest side, located around the intersection of South Halsted and 18th Street. The neighborhood spreads East and West of the Dan Ryan Expressway, and reaches from 16th Street, on the North, to approximately Canalport on the South. By car, the Chicago Arts District neighborhood is only about five minutes from the Chicago Loop. The neighborhood has provided a home and work space for hundreds of artists each year, over the past four decades. Established artists, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, performance artists as well as individuals teaching in the arts have all thrived here. Many have said that this is where their best work was achieved.
